People assume they know what content is, in a general sense. But their are many that are not aware of what type of content they are putting on their site, or the relevancy of it. Have I confuse you yet?
Let me explain. With the right type of content you will find that it a draw for targeted traffic and the search engines and quality backlinks.
The wrong kind of content, gives you traffic that is not targeted (means no sign-up, buys, etc.) and the search engines may well ignore you if the content is not relevant to your topic.
So what types of content should be on your site?
Different Types of Content
You may be surprise to learn, that in fact, there are two types of content that you usually see on a blog or website, they are short-term content and long-term content. Each serves a purpose and is needed.
Short-term content can be added to your website in the way of news, contests, and opinion polls, etc. If the content is relevant to your niche, you will see an increase in traffic on a short term basis. But beware, news cannot be held on to. You must write about the news in the "now" or expect no readers. Why? Who wants to read old news.
Long-term content are "how to pieces", blog posts (sometimes), and reference material. Why do you need it? It adds "value" to your website or blog. And Google loves value.
As you can surmise, long-term content is great for backlinks. If webmasters come upon your site and see the content, and like it, they will link to it, if it is relevant to their site.
There is one other type content that shouldn’t be overlooked, it filler type content. Filler information could be a hyperlink advertisement, e-commerce descriptions, specific labels, etc. Now you may think that the search engines will not pick up that type of information. But, if your anchor tag is specific, and a searcher is looking for that specific item, you may have a sale or a reader.
To conclude, if you think content is only a bunch of words on a page, think again. Online, your words, and your content, is relevant to your website or blog’s success.
